Understanding what happens in practice
Successful scale-up depends on reliable real-world data. In our lab, we start by using our small-scale membrane unit to test how your specific product stream behaves. We focus on the key process parameters:
- Flux & fouling: Determining the optimal flow rate per m² of membrane surface area while preventing rapid fouling. We also assess whether upstream process steps could improve membrane performance.
- Type of separation: Determining which membrane type (MF, UF, NF or RO) and pore size deliver the desired yield and separation efficiency.
- Viscosity: Analysing how the liquid behaves as the product becomes increasingly concentrated.
Scale up without surprises
With our recently expanded membrane capacity at both pilot and production scale, we do more than test whether the process works: we validate its performance at a larger scale. The route is clear. We start with laboratory tests using the MMS unit, calculate the relevant process parameters, conduct a pilot trial and then scale up further. Based on the data obtained, we can accurately calculate the membrane surface area required for your desired production volume.
